The Council acts as a coordinating body for all matters relating to Austrian archaeological institutions (in research, teaching, mediation, protection of cultural assets and preservation of historical monuments) and as a central link at both federal and state level between university institutes and non-university research institutions including museums. The Council aims at setting innovative accents through the development of joint strategies. By optimizing synergies, it gives a substantial contribution to the quality assurance and further development of archaeology in Austria within the European and non-European context. A further task is the coordination of the manifold activities and the creation of a network that strengthens the role of Austria as a research location and increases the international visibility of the country. The Council meets at least once a year (spring and/or autumn), with meetings taking place also in federal states outside of Vienna.

The Council is composed of the following institutions, which are represented by their heads or by delegated colleagues.

The chairmanship is held by the board of Directors of the OeAI at the Austrian Academy of Sciences.
