A great number of stone monuments have been discovered since the publication of the first CSIR Carnuntum volumes between 1967 and 1970 and the demands on the corpus have increased constantly. 

The scientific revision of the CSIR Carnuntum will update and complement the inventory of stone monuments; an interdisciplinary evaluation of this rich source of material will also be undertaken.

The results are published in print as well as digital publications.

An Interdisciplinary Evaluation of an Archaeological Find Category

In continuation of the CarVin-project, financed by FWF until 2018 and dealing with Roman quarrying in the region of Carnuntum and Vindobona, ongoing research is focused on implementing the interdisciplinary results into the CSIR project. The results concerning the local and regional lithotypes used in antiquity are currently enhanced in cooperation with the project partners. Linked to data and results concerning the history of transport, economy and art, they will lead to a comprehensive cultural-historical interpretation and evaluation of quarrying and use of stone in Northwestern Pannonia.

Investigations on the polychromy of the Roman Stone Monuments of Carnuntum

The original polychromy of the ancient stone monuments of the Roman provinces has been known for a long time and efforts have been made to document and conserve the existing remains of colors. By combining and experimenting with various technical and scientific methods of analysis and visualization, the inclusion of this aspect within the framework of the CSIR is being promoted.
