SONG ABOUT MAJOR ÄÄTE

Description: Vyacheslav Ubushiev and his wife Tatiana perform a folk song about a Kalmyk soldier in the Red Army, Aita (Äätə́) Hodzhinov, who died in a battle during World War II. The song explains how he, a major, led a detachment and died as the result of being shot by a stray rifle bullet.

SONG ABOUT ERDNI DELIKOV

Description: Dmitrii Sharaev performs a song composed by folk musician Bulgun Mandzhurakova in memory of the war hero Erdni Delikov. The song became popular among the Kalmyk folk singers. Erdni Delikov fought in The Great Patriotic War (World War II) and was the first Kalmyk soldier who gained the medal and title of Soviet Union Hero. He died during the battles against the Wehrmacht for the Don river.

SONGS ABOUT DEPORTATION AND BELOVED FRIEND

Description: Vera Popova performs her own songs and speaks about their background. The first song is about the deportation of Kalmyks to Siberia. She composed this song during the first years of her exile. In 1946 she was arrested for writing the song and sentenced to seven years of hard labour. The second song Vera sings is dedicated to her beloved friend.
