BIOREMIA (BIOfilm-REsistant Materials for hard tissue Implant Applications) is a European Training Network funded by the European Commission under Horizon 2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions. There has been a problem of implant-related infections for orthopedic and dental implants caused by bacterial biofilms leading to implant rejection with high social costs. To improve the patient's quality of life, BIOREMIA proposes innovative material-based solutions with enhanced antibacterial functionality while improving the biological acceptance of bone-related implants.

As a BIOREMIA member, the Chair of Materials Physics at Montanuniversität Leoben works closely with another 16 organizations in 11 countries (Germany, Italy, Sweden, Greece, UK, Spain, Ireland, France, Switzerland, Netherlands, and the USA). Furthermore, two Early-Stage Researchers (ESRs), Fei-Fan Cai and Juan José Londoño Rueda, are registered as PhD students at the Chair of Materials Physics. Fei-Fan works on developing a hybrid micro-/nano-patterned BMG–polymer construct with bactericidal properties, and Juan focuses on achieving excellent bactericidal properties through chemical and topological design of precious metal-based glasses for dental applications.
