Renée Lugschitz studied history at the University of Vienna and wrote her dissertation at the University Miguel Hernández, Elche, on questions of journalistic quality from a gender perspective on the case of "Female Correspondents Covering the Spanish Civil War".
After many years in journalism, among others at profil, profil extra and Der Standard, she has been active as an author and researcher in Austria, Spain and Germany since 2003. For her book "Spanienkämpferinnen. Ausländische Frauen im Spanischen Bürgerkrieg 1936-1939" (2012, Lit Verlag) she received the Bruno Kreisky Recognition Award in 2013.
From 2014 to 2019 she worked as a researcher at the Institute for Comparative Media and Communication Research (CMC Institute) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences / University of Klagenfurt on the projects "Die ersten Kriegsberichterstatterinnen: The New Role of Women Journalists in the Spanish Civil War" and "Journalism in Transition", which built on Medienhaus Wien's "Journalist Report" baseline studies.
Since October 2020, she has been a researcher in the D-A-CH project "Innovations in Journalism in Democratic Societies", which is carried out in Austria by the CMC Institute and Medienhaus Wien.
For Medienhaus Wien, she is also active in research with a focus on gender and diversity and in quality control, including as co-author of Journalism Report VI, final editor for Journalism Report I-V and studies on diversity in Austrian newsrooms.
