Federico Subervi, PhD, who is Co-Editor-in-Chief of The Oxford Encyclopedia of Race, Ethnicity and Communication, gives the opening talk for the new CMC lecture series „Medienpolitik – neu denken“ („Rethinking Media Politcs“).
Media & News Literacy: An Imperative for the Future of Democracy

Democracy is under increasing threats, not by hostile armies of soldiers but instead by the tsunamis of misinformation, disinformation, propaganda, and all sorts of “fake news” disseminated via the Internet, social media, and even inadvertently by traditional established media. The social ills caused by such threats require immediate and prompt education that can help the public at large understand and contest such nefarious information flows. The presentation will include examples and sources of some of the most problematic media content, and then address the imperative of media and news literacy education as decisive barrier to the spread.
Federico Subervi was invited to Vienna in cooperation with the Department of Communication at the University of Vienna, where he gives a lecture on „Media Communication in Colonial Settings: The Case of Puerto Rico“ on Monday, 29 April 2019.
Die Vortragsreihe „Medienpolitik – neu denken“, initiiert vom Institute for Comparative Media and Communication Studies (CMC), dient als Präsentationsplattform für gegenwärtig und künftig relevante Themen zur Medienpolitik. Das CMC lädt dazu führende Kommunikations- und Medienwissenschaftlerinnen und -wissenschaftler ein das Wort zu ergreifen, um die aktuelle Forschung zu reflektieren, deren gesellschaftliche Tragweite auszuloten und zu medien- und demokratiepolitschen Fragen zu debattieren.
Nach den Vorträgen freuen wir uns auf Gespräche & Diskussionen bei einer Erfrischung im informellen Rahmen!
