Katja Kaufmann, researcher and PhD candidate at CMC, won the 2017 Best Student Paper Award of the Association of Internet Researchers (AoIR) for her paper “Navigating a new life: Syrian refugees and their smartphones in Vienna” at the association’s Annual Conference from 18-21 October 2017 at the University of Tartu, Estonia.
As stated on the AoIR website, “the program committee was particularly impressed by the relevance and timeliness of the topic, and emphasized that the contribution offered important insights both into the relationship between people and technology but also more specific insights into the personal technology within marginal(ized) communities.“
