...studied German Studies, Art History and Theology at the University of Vienna and completed her habilitation degree in 1997. After research visits to Cambridge and Harvard, she was a visiting professor in Zurich, Berlin, Coimbra, et al. In 2002, she became professor of Austrian Literature at the University of Salzburg. She was elected Corresponding Member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in 2006 and Full Member in 2014. Since 2007, she has held a professorship of Modern German Literature at the University of Vienna. In 1999, she received the Austrian National Price for Literary Criticism and in 2013 the Austrian National Teaching Award.
She is president of the Arthur Schnitzler Society and editor of the Critical Edition of Schnitzler’s Early Works (11 volumes so far). The main areas of her research are German literature of the 19th and 20th centuries, especially of the fin de siècle, and Literature and the Arts. She has published on many Austrian writers, e.g. Schnitzler („Poetics and Memory“, 1997), Joseph Roth, Canetti, Bachmann, Jelinek, Aichinger, Mayröcker, and edited volumes on intermediality, „Art in Texts“ (2005), „Handbook of Art Quotations“ (2011) and „Painting discourses“ (2013).
Since 2018, she has been the head of ACE (Austrian Corpora and Editions) at the Austrian Academy of Sciences.
