Christine Gruber was born in Vienna in 1956. She studied history and ancient history at the University of Vienna where she received her PhD in 1983. From 1983, she was employed at the ‘Austrian Biographical Encyclopedia 1815–1950’ (as special editor from 1988). From 2005 to 2008, she headed the 'e-OeBL’ project. She was deputy director of the institute 'Austrian Biographical Encyclopedia and Biographical Documentation’ between 2009 and 2012, and from 2013 to 2017 research unit coordinator for the Austrian Biographical Encyclopedia. She has been chief editor of the Austrian Biographical Encyclopedia since 2015 and is deputy leader of the project 'Mapping Historical Networks: building the new Austrian Prosopographical | Biographical Information System (APIS)’. Christine Gruber is co-initiator of the European ‘Biography Portal’ and chaired its working group from 2008 to 2013.
