The principles and methods of Open Innovation have so far mainly been applied in the corporate world for developing new products, services, or business models, as well as in the context of open source and community-based innovation. However, first insights into Open Innovation in Science (OIS) suggest positive results regarding the efficiency, novelty and impact of research processes and suggest the possibility of scholarly work beyond the silos of scientific research organizations and disciplines.
Drawing on the experiences from two pilot projects – CRIS (Crowdsourcing Research Questions in Science) and LOIS (Lab for Open Innovation in Science) – the Ludwig Boltzmann Gesellschaft has recently launched the Open Innovation in Science Research and Competence Center (OIS Center). The OIS Center is established as an international hub for investigating, discussing and experimenting with the use of Open Innovation principles and methods in science, along the entire process of generating and disseminating new scientific research. OIS builds on innovation-relevant knowledge that is distributed along contextually, geographically or functionally dispersed sources, and seeks to enable, initiate and purposefully manage knowledge flows across organizational and domain-specific boundaries in order to generate novel research questions, design and conduct research studies, disseminate research results and eventually translate new scientific knowledge into innovation. As such, it clearly goes beyond existing concepts of Open Access, Open Journals or Open Data and challenges established ways of conducting and disseminating science.
In this seminar, Marion Poetz discusses the motivation behind the Open Innovation in Science Initiative, presents basic concepts and approaches to Open Innovation and introduces first insights and cases related to Open Innovation in Science.
