The aim of the department "Variation and Change of German in Austria" (“Variation und Wandel des Deutschen in Österreich” (VaWaDiÖ)), which was founded in 2016, is to research the variation and change of the German language in Austria with a special focus on lexis (see WBÖ and LIÖ), morphology (especially word formation) and syntax. A central project of the department is the "Wörterbuch der bairischen Mundarten in Österreich" (WBÖ). The long-term project of the Austrian Academy of Sciences is dedicated to the comprehensive documentation and lexicographic processing of the highly structured dialect landscape of Austria.
Methods and paradigms of digital linguistics play a central role in the activities of the research department, which is why the location of the research department at the Austrian Centre for Digital Humanities and Cultural Heritage (ACDH-CH) has proved to be a particularly favourable research constellation, from which a wide range of cooperation opportunities arise.
The projects of the research department VaWaDiÖ are partly or completely multi-dimensionally connected to the new "Lexical Information System Austria" ("Lexikalisches Informationssystem Österreich" (LIÖ)). Through LIÖ it is possible to access the data and materials which were prepared in the projects (language maps, sound recordings, questionnaires, etc.) and view the analyses as well as lexicographic articles via various query and search functions. Of particular value are the data links between different projects of the department on the one hand (see for example WBÖ articles, scans of the WBÖ main catalogue, language maps, data analyses, audio recordings) as well as between the departmental or ACDH-CH internal data and external cooperation projects (especially SFB DiÖ) on the other hand. Already in the initial phase of VaWaDiÖ (2017) the digitisation of one of the analogue main sources of the WBÖ, the so-called main catalogue ("Hauptkatalog"), was tackled.
