Call for Papers
The Vienna Institute of Demography collaborates with the Population Studies Center, University of Pennsylvania and the Department of Population Studies
University of Bamberg, in organizing a conference on "Causal Analysis in Population Studies: Concepts, Methods, Applications", to be held in Vienna on 30 November and 1 December 2006. The reason for choosing this topic is that researchers specializing in applied population studies have only very recently begun to use the formal counterfactual approach to causal analysis, despite the fact that estimates of causal effects are essential for designing public policies, assessing the influence of socio-economic conditions on demographic behavior, and understanding the unfolding of demographic events over the life course. This conference wants to bring together leading researchers working on causal analysis in population sciences and to discuss the new developments in theoretical and statistical causality as well as empirical applications. Robert Moffitt and James Heckman (to be confirmed) will give keynote lectures . We plan to publish the conference papers in a special journal issue.
Organizing Committee
The Organizing Committee consists of Henriette Engelhardt and Alexia Prskawetz from the Vienna Institute of Demography, and Hans-Peter Kohler from the Population Studies Center. Please e-mail all submissions to Henriette Engelhardt (henriette.engelhardt@oeaw.ac.at).
Conference location
The conference will be held at the headquarters of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna, Austria.
