|5: Summarizing early modern historians’ scholarship|
The Portuguese presence in southern Arabia shortly after the year 1500 introduced a new quality of contact. As nominally a part of the Ottoman empire, South Arabia experienced a new quality of long distance connections, to be characterized as a kind of colonial relation. For this period, a number of historical Arabic texts (e.g. al-Nahrawali) and early European accounts (Albuquerque) will be analyzed in the context of VISCOM’s overall topic.
