News from FAIR

Yesterday the FAIR GmbH was finally founded in Wiesbaden, Germany. Nine countries signed the convention for the construction and operation of the Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research.

These countries were: Germany, Finland, France, India, Poland, Romania, Russia, Slovenia and Sweden. This international agreement forms the framework of FAIR.

Immediately after this event the FAIR GmbH was established as a company. The first shareholders are Germany, Russia, India, Romania and the Swedish-Finnish consortium. The council of the company appointed in its first session Prof. Dr. Boris Sharkov as Scientific Managing Director and Dr. Simone Richter as Administrative Managing Director. Dr. Beatrix Vierkorn-Rudolph has been appointed as first chairperson of the FAIR Council.

The countries that could not join due to their internal ratification procedures are expected to do so within the next year. China, the United Kingdom, Saudi-Arabia and Spain are also planning to contribute to FAIR.

After about ten years of negotiations, R&D and writing reports this is a great success. In the not so distant future we will carry out the research for which we all fought so long. Now everybody involved in the planning and construction of FAIR has to be aware that FAIR is not an intellectual exercise anymore. FAIR WILL BE BUILT!
