Motion events in first language acquisition of German: the impact of language-specific factors

Supervisor: Wolfgang U. Dressler

The PhD project aims to discover the nature of the interaction between universal cognitive and language-specific factors in the acquisition of motion expressions in Austrian German.

Typological research about motion events differentiates between verb-framed languages, e.g. Romance, Korean, which typically encode Path in the verb root, vs. satellite-framed languages, e.g. German, English, which prefer to encode Manner in the verb root and Path in satellites. Previous studies propose that it should be easier fo speakers of satellite-framed languages to express Manner and Path at the same time than for speakers of verb-framed languages, which require peripheral constructions, e.g. gerundival phrases, to encode Manner in the same utterance - a pattern that should also be found in child language acquisition.

To test these hypotheses, utterances about motion events in two Austrian German longitudinal corpora will be analysed. In order to disentangle the universal from the language-specific, the results will be compared crosslinguistically with two verb-framed languages (French: Hickmann et al. 2009, 2010 and Korean: Choi in prep.) and another satellite-framed language (English: Hickmann et al. 2009, 2010) analysed within the same framework.
