In the project DETECTIVE
DEcadal deTECTion of biodIVErsity in alpine lakes)
funded by the Nationalkomitee Alpenforschung of the ÖAW

Place: Austrian Academy of Sciences, Institute for Limnology, Mondseestraße 9, 5310 Mondsee, Austria

Background: The last two decades have witnessed major changes in global climate directly resulting in a general increase of lake temperatures, longer vegetation periods and stronger thermal stratification. Indirect effects include increased run-off and nutrient input during periods of heavy rainfall. In Austria and its neighboring countries, the most dramatic ecological consequences of climate warming are anticipated in alpine ecosystems, in particular at ecological boundaries (= ecotones) such as around the tree- and timberline. The research project will take advantage of an existing data set that was recorded in 45 Austrian Alpine lakes of the Niedere Tauern Region (1500 – 2300 m a SL.) a decade ago. By studying the same group of indicator taxa as in the previous investigation, we will be able to analyze changes in the species composition that occurred over the past decade. We will apply modern molecular tools to assess biodiversity in highest resolution both on an interspecific and intraspecific level.

It is the aim of the dissertation to establish an ultra-deep sequencing protocol suitable to monitor the biodiversity of key groups of planktonic microrganisms in alpine lakes. Second generation sequencing techniques allow for coverage that is orders of magnitude higher than the traditional Sanger sequencing method of cloned amplicons, that are obtained from environmental samples. The to be established protocol will include advanced techniques of DNA extraction from environmental samples, PCR based amplification of selected gene loci such as rDNA genes and subsequent parallel sequencing. The large amount of sequence reads obtained will be processed using bioinformatics following standard algorithms.

Qualifications: MSc in Molecular Biology or Genetics

The Institute for Limnology
of the Austrian Academy of Sciences

is seeking to appoint a

Research scientist (Postdoc)

who will perform integrative research on Evolutionary Palaeolimnology in Mondsee, Austria.  The Institute is located in the Salzkammergut lake area, 30 km east of the City of Salzburg.  The Institute has a staff complement of approximately 25, including 10 research scientists. The successful candidate will have an outstanding research and publication record in palaeolimnology, evolutionary biology, or related fields. Research specialists that focus on adaptive evolutionary response to past and present environmental change in lakes and link to the existing working groups at the Institute (see www.oeaw.ac.at/limno/) are particularly welcome. We seek to integrate investigations into the past with studies on the ongoing climate change scenario in the pre-Alpine and high Alpine Austrian lakes. Sound English language skills are essential; German language skills are no prerequisite, but at least some basic skills should be acquired in a reasonable time. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain a partially extramurally funded research program and to participate in supervising of graduate students. The position is full-time; initial appointment is for 2 years, reappointment for up to 6 years is possible. Tenure-track is also possible for outstanding candidates, following an unequivocally positive assessment of performance based on established criteria of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. The initial salary level is within 45,000 to 55,000 € per annum.

Submit your application with a full CV, list of publications, short statement of research interests and, optionally, names of three referees to Institute for Limnology of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, Herzog-Odilostrasse 101, A-5310 Mondsee, or electronically to thomas.weisse@oeaw.ac.at. Closing date: 15 March 2010.
