Molecular Genetics Laboratory

KLIVV has a small, but well-equipped laboratory for conducting molecular genetic analyses, including the following:

  • Multi-capillary DNA Sequencing
  • Multi-locus DNA Fingerprinting
  • Microsatellites (Fluorescently-labeled Fragment Analysis)
  • Paternity Analyses (Multiplex)
  • SSCP (Single Strand Conformational Polymorphism)
  • Fluorescently-labeled Fragment Analysis
  • Quantification of DNA, cDNA, (qPCR) and Gene Expression
  • Cloning and Plasmid extraction

The lab is equipped with the following:

  • 4 PCR Machines
  • ABI 3130xl Capillary DNA Sequencer
  • Beckman Coulter CEQ 8000 Capillary DNA Sequencer
  • ABI 7300 Real-Time PCR System
  • Centrifuges
  • Laminar Air Flow Chamber/Hood
  • COD Incubators
  • Microscopes
  • Software (Genemapper v 4.0, Peak Scanner Software v1.0, Sequencing Analysis software, etc.)

The Lab includes a small Microbiology Facility, which has Incubators and other equipment to facilitate cloning and microbiological research on pathogens and parasites.

The Lab also has a Sperm-Tracker System, which is used for studying sperm competition.
