2010-
The international year of Biodiversity

01.01.2010: The United Nations declared 2010 to be the International Year of Biodiversity. To put it simply, biodiversity is the diversity of life. Measures to protect biodiversity are urgently claimed as the EU targets to stop biodiversity loss unil 2010 were not reached. KIÖS plans an event to the international year of Biodiversity as well as additional relevant publications.

Kerner von Marilaun Workshop 2009:
Landscape-Based Cultural Ecosystem Services

28.07.2009:Scientists, policy makers and the general public now agree that human wellbeing depends on sustaining the health of the earth’s ecosystems. This relationship has recently been emphasized by the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (United Nations) under the rubric of “ecosystems services”.
Based on existing research, participants will work collaboratively to identify and articulate the linkages between the condition of ecological systems and the landscape features that are important determiners of the levels of aesthetic, recreational, heritage, spiritual and other important cultural values.

New Publication : "The Common Hamster (Cricetus cricetus): Perspectives on an endangered species" in the Biosystematics and Ecology Series

02.02.2009:The Common Hamster is a fascinating species that differs from other hibernating small mammals in several aspects. Females have up to three litters per season and under favourable conditions both males and females can reproduce in their first year. The ability to cache food changes the need for fattening prior to hibernation and consequently can alter the pattern of reproductive activity. The Common Hamster has lived in agricultural areas in close association with humans for centuries...
