Introduction "We are not dealing with journal articles any more – we are dealing with research communications among scientists. Thus the terms 'article', 'paper' and 'publication' should die." "In the new paradigm, research communications are n-dimensional as one can 'jump' from one idea to others." Already in 1945, *Vannevar Bush, in his famous article "As We May Think", discovered that "professionally, our methods of transmitting and reviewing the results of research are generations old and by now are totally inadequate for their purposes." Today, the almost universal use of computers in academia and the spread of information and communication technologies is changing the way academics communicate their knowledge among themselves and to the outside world: online journals are spreading, information is accessed through remote databases etc. (more about). The next step may be to take full advantage of the new opportunities of the electronic format and the network environment. To explore and discuss this possible development is the purpose of the present paper. |
