The notion of "biomimicry" relates to R&D activities that use principles from biology and are inspired by nature. Here we understand biomimetics in a broad scope, ranging from energy efficiency, pharmaceuticals, design and architecture, to traffic, stability of materials, organizational principles and earthquake protection. This project aimed to identify the potential for Austrian R&D in the field of biomimicry. It identified the companies and research groups (at universities and other research institutions) that are working in this area, including analysis of their strengths, and ways that these could be built upon. In addition we provided an overview of technology policies used internationally for biomimetics, particularly in selected countries like Germany and other EU member states. This included details on how other countries make this field more visible and ways it can be stimulated. |
