Funded under the 6th research framework programme, a primarily political science network of excellence (CONNEX Connecting Excellence in European Governance) founded a new type of scientific journal. Reviews are articles which give an overview and discuss the state of our knowledge in a research area on the basis of the published scholarly literature. A review published on paper is only up-to-date for a short period of time as research evolves further. In an electronic journal there is the opportunity to update the articles constantly. Hence the label "living". The articles are only published online and are linked to a growing bibliographic database. This exciting idea of the so called "Living Reviews" comes form the Albert Einstein Institute for Relativity (a member of the Max Planck Society MPG). The Centre for Information Management (ZIM) of the MPG offers in its Living Reviews Backoffice Project the software for editing such a journal on the basis of open source. Following the original, the Living Reviews in Relativity, a second living reviews journal, has been established (again in the area of the pure sciences). Our aim was to apply this idea to the social sciences and to found the Living Reviews in European Governance (LREG). The
In this project, we mainly co-operated with the Institute of Advanced Studies, Vienna, department of political science (IHS), where both the editor-in-chief and the managing editor of the journal are based, and with the network co-ordinator, the Mannheim Centre for European Social Research (MZES). |
