Pia Jolliffe (Oxford, UK): "The 'Gift' of Education' and Intergenerational Relations among the Karen People"

Thursday, 26. January 2017, 4pm

ÖAW, Institut für Sozialanthropologie
A-1020 Wien, Hollandstrasse 11-13

Focusing on the Karen people from Burma/Myanmar in Thailand and in the United Kingdom, this lecture analyses how global, regional and local developments affect patterns of learning. Based on Bronisław Malinowski`s and Marcel Mauss´ writings about the gift, Pia Jolliffe proposes an understanding of “education” as a gift that establishes unequal relationships between those who give and those who receive education. She argues whether or not relations between teachers and learners remain unequal largely depends on the opportunities learners have to become teachers themselves and to pass on their knowledge to younger generations, or to render it useful for their elders. But if such opportunities do not exist, for example within the constraints of refugee camps - an awkward situation is created in which the young seem to remain unable to return the “gift” they received from their elders.
