In memoriam Hannspeter Winter
22 August 1941 – 8 November 2006

Prof. Dr. Hannspeter Winter, Director of the "Institut für Allgemeine Physik" of the Vienna University of Technology and Head of Research Unit of the Association EURATOM-ÖAW, suddenly and unexpectedly died on 8 November 2006.

In 1996, Prof. Dr. Hannspeter Winter was appointed Head of Research Unit of the then newly established Association EURATOM-ÖAW. Under the auspices of the Austrian Academy of Sciences he coordinated all fusion-relevant R & D activities at Austrian universities, research institutions and industry supported by the European Commission under EFDA and the Contract of Association with the help of the ÖAW-EURATOM Coordination Office.

In his function as Head of Research Unit he advised, encouraged and supported all participating research groups with his strongest commitment and guided the researchers of the Association EURATOM-ÖAW to internationally acknowledged results. In the European context, he shared his ideas and visions at many meetings, especially with a view to the role of smaller Associations during the construction and operation phases of ITER.

With Hannspeter Winter the Association EURATOM-ÖAW does not only lose its Head of Research Unit, but a highly respected leader, colleague and teacher. His expertise, constructive ideas and his optimistic and charismatic personality will be greatly missed.
