New and improved means of fabric analyses in weakly deformed rocks

Project Management: Prof. Dr. Robert SCHOLGER, Department of Applied Geological Sciences and Geophysics, University of Leoben
Duration: 4 years (beginning 2008)

Abstract

Recent geodynamic investigations in the Eastern Alps and surrounding areas gave rise for large neotectonic movements, which are dated younger than 5Ma. A joint counterclockwise vertical axis rotation of whole structural units was derived from paleomagnetic results, but comparable macroscopic fabric indicators are absent in many cases. The main objective of the project involves improved means for the petrophysical analyses of textures in Alpine rocks which are not accessible yet in order to observe changes of the regional deformation pattern. The magnetic fabric of rock samples from the Molasse zone, the Styrian and Vienna basins and the Northern Calcareous Alps will be investigated in order to delineate zones of different intensity of strain.
