Precision Journalism v. Narrative Journalism: Toward a Unified Field Theory

Technologies of the information age produce data faster than they produce understanding. Instead of replacing journalism, as some have speculated, these technologies are creating a new market need: for synthesis and interpretation of the ever-increasing stream of facts. Even before the Internet, journalists in the second half of the 20th century were experimenting with two ways of processing the increasing flow of information to make it more manageable. Precision journalism borrowed the tools of science, and narrative journalism was based on art. In their early stages, these two approaches seemed to be in conflict. Now in the 21st century, we see that we need both. Raw data require structure to be made coherent. Science creates structure with theory; art creates it through storytelling. Mass media must find ways to merge these two strategies and tell theory-grounded stories about the data. Professional journalists with new sets of skills will be needed.
