Ottoman-European Links in Floriculture and Gardening
Nurhan Atasoy
While the high quality of some 16th century Shiraz manuscripts has occasionally been mentioned in the scholarly literature, they have more often been simply passed over as provincial or commercial. Gardens and the emergence of a particular floral style constitute a major feature of Ottoman art during the period of Sultan Süleyman (r. 1520-66). Süleyman created about 30 gardens in and around Istanbul. At the same time, flower motifs started being painted in a naturalistic way that made it possible to identify the species. They appeared in every field of Ottoman art enabling us to speak of a "Flower Style". Nurhan Atasoy explains its emergence and its links to both Ottoman art and culture and Ottoman gardens, the major components of which she introduces. European visitors were highly impressed by the abundance of flowers in Ottoman gardens. Not only the bulbs and seeds of flowers but also trees and other plants made their way to the West, thus turning Turkey into a horticultural center for Europe.
