Baduy Music and Life: Temptations for Ascetics
Wim van Zanten
Leiden University, Leiden/The Netherlands,
Vice-President of the International Council for Traditional Music
In this presentation I would like to discuss music and life of the Baduy people in the southern part of the province Banten, West Java. The minority group of 8000 Baduy consider themselves to have originated in the region around the village Kannékés, where they are still living nowadays. They have been recognised as an 'indigenous community' with collective land rights by the post-Suharto Indonesian government. Baduy society is changing and I shall describe how the Baduy and the Indonesian authorities try to steer this process. I shall also discuss some of the difficulties in carrying out the fieldwork among the Baduy. Further, I shall present film excerpts to illustrate change in Baduy life and music from 1976 to 2003.
