Nanoscience for the Conservation of Cultural Heritage
Piero Baglioni, Department of Chemistry and CSGI,
University of Florence, Florence, Italy
Nanotechnology, usually portrayed as the futuristic pursuit of molecular scale machines, has something to offer to the Conservation of Cultural Heritage. As illustrative examples, we report some recent methods for the restoration of works of art where humble nanoparticles of calcium/magnesium hydroxide and microemulsions have been used to restore frescoes, or to de-acidify paper, wood and canvas.
Examples from workshops will be highlighted: Beato Angelico, Taddeo Gaddi, Piero della Francesca, Santi di Tito, Maya Murales (Calakmul), and Vasa warship (Stockholm).
