Local tango on amateur tapes - a case study of
Southern Ostrobothnia (Western Finland)

Vortrag von Vesa Kurkela

The paper discusses experiences on the historiography of local popular music and old amateur recordings of Finnish dance music, especially the Finnish tango. After writing a general history of Finnish popular music the author decided to leave a national level and commercial recordings as source material. His new research project deals the history of local music making in Southern Ostrobothnia (western Finland). The most important sources are old amateur tapes from the mid-1960s and personal life stories of local musicians, representing various generations. The area is famous for its tango maniacs; even today, the mythical tango discourse is a central part of local identity.
