The Institute for the Study of Ancient Culture (IKant) deals with comprehensive cultural-historical problems within a supra-regional range. Hereby, the current research emphases build a temporal bridge from the Archaic to the Byzantine period and are geographically located in the Eastern and the Central Mediterranean as well as in the Roman Danube provinces:
- living and residing in Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages
- sepulchral context and collective ideals (beliefs of afterlife, death and grave cult, pilgrimage)
- urbanism and settlement-historical transformation processes
- Ancient Music
The current research of the department of "Documenta antiqua" is concentrated on
-coinage and finances of the Roman empire and the ancient Iranian world
-cultural and intellectual history of Greco-Roman Asia Minor on the basis of epigraphic evidence
-legal life in the Greek polis and in Hellenistic-Roman Egypt based on the epigraphic and papyrological evidence
